Total War has a LOT of counters (3060 total) and their storage once punched out for play presents challenges. We’ve tried out many ways to handle this and recommend using compartmented plastic boxes. Ideally these boxes should be sturdy, have many small compartments (no more than about 1-2″ in all dimensions), have tops that lock in some way to prevent counters from moving from one compartment to another regardless of how the box is oriented and to prevent the box from popping open inadvertently, have rounded bottoms to each compartment so the counters can be taken out easily with just your fingers, and be nested stackable. We’ve found a box that meets all of those requirements and are pleased to be able to offer it for your consideration.
The counter box is just under 14″ (35cm) long, a bit over 8.5″ (22cm) wide, and about 1.3″ (3cm) deep. It has 32 compartments each capable of holding about 100 counters without spending any time neatly stacking the counters. If the counters are sorted by initial setup (one compartment per army) and reinforcements (one compartment each turn), there are enough compartments to easily fit all the sorted counters into 3 such boxes–one box holds all the Axis forces and the other two the Soviet forces. The top of each compartment easily has room to fit about half of a normal 1×3″ stick-on label for easy identification/resorting.
We offer these counter storage boxes as two package deals:

Total War Shipping Update – Shipping date has slipped a bit–mostly due to time required to be spent on arranging distribution/retail details and tracking down current addresses of last of prepub orders (still have about 40 unknowns out of 992 prepub orders), but we should still be shipping by end of November or the first week in December. We appreciate everyone’s patience as the last problems with getting the game out are solved.
Assembly of Total War is well underway. We now have about 1000 of each map folded, and have similar numbers of countersheet sets collated and game box tops and bottoms assembled (they came flat). That is slightly more than what we need for the preorder, but far from having all done for the entire print run. Still waiting on some of the charts and the rules and OBs to come back from printer. When they do, we will quickly collate the charts, assemble the games, shrinkwrap, box, and ship. Last of printing is slotted for 25-31 October, so should have last components back no later than about 10 November. All the game component sub assembly being done now means that entire preorder will probably ship in a short period of about 1 week. So just about everyone should have their game by end of November. We also now have all the boxing/shipping supplies for the game in the warehouse (the shrinkwrap, packing peanuts/bubblewrap, and individual game shipper boxes).
A round of thanks to our customers. Orders for the unfolded maps have exceeded 225 sets! All of the separate map orders have been sent except 3 that are awaiting mailing tubes (triangles :-). Comments from the folks who have already received their maps have been uniformly positive. We agree with those who feel this has set a new standard for maps at this scale. The number ordered has exceeded our early estimates of interest in the unfolded sets and we will certainly consider doing the same thing with at least part of the next maps we order.
We’ve included images of the printed Total War counter sheet 112 for those folks who asked to see the Red Army heavy tank units again and counter sheet 108 showing the Soviet Winterized and Guards units.
The last of the maps and mailing tubes have arrived here and we will start mailing the orders for flat maps out next week. Customers can still order flat maps for their games and/or additional map sets. Ordering information for flat maps is included at the end of this post. Demand for the flat maps has been heavier than we anticipated and extra sets may not be available for much longer.
We are homing in on the last batch of the local printing which should be at the printers in the second week of Sept for their promised press slot.
We have had a lot of inquiries about the announced increases in shipping costs. We have all experienced this at the gas pump. FedEx and UPS have both announced increases in shipping rates that will go into effect at the end of September. The U.S. Postal Service notified congress that they too must have an increase. This will certainly effect us in the near future but it will not effect orders already made or orders made prior to September 16, 2011.
The $195.00 pre-publication price for Total War will be good until 16 September 2011. Europa Association members also qualify for a 10% discount and free shipping to US addresses when making a pre-pub order. All orders for Total War placed before this date will also include the Bonus Soviet Grand Europa 1939-42 OB/counters.
The Total War preorder, and the special Total War flat map order options close on 16 September 2011. On 17 September the price for Total War goes to its post-publication price of $234.
TOTAL WAR FLAT MAP ORDER OPTIONS
We are pleased to confirm that the price for one set of the flat (unfolded) Total War maps will be $25. This is a special price and will be good only for orders placed by September 16th, 2011. All flat map orders will be shipped as received, in advance of any orders for the game. The normal cost for map sets will be $12 per map/$72 for set or $8 for map/$48 for set for Europa Association members after the normal 33% discount. This special price at $25 per map set is approximately 50% or more off normal price. A small way of saying thank you for your patience.
Options for unfolded maps are listed below. Note: All prices quoted below are in US dollars.
No Folds Option #1: Already have one or two copies of Total War on order and want to have the map set(s) from that game (or games) sent rolled up (no folds/creases) in a separate triangular tube via US Post Office Priority Mail. Note that this means your maps would ship in one package and the rest of the game (or games) in another package. Additional cost beyond that you have already paid for the game would be—note that the cost is the same regardless of whether this is for one or two sets of maps to be send unfolded:
Sent to an address in the USA: $20 ($0 for already paid for maps + $20 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address in Canada: $30 ($0 for already paid for maps + $30 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address outside of USA/Canada: $40 ($0 for already paid for maps + $40 s/h)
No Folds Option #2: Purchase a set of Total War maps in addition to the folded set in the game and have the unfolded map set sent rolled up (no folds/creases) in a triangular tube via US Post Office Priority Mail.
Sent to an address in the USA: $45 ($25 for one map set + $20 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address in Canada: $55 ($25 for one map set + $30 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address outside of USA/Canada: $65 ($25 for one map set + $40 s/h)
No Folds Option #3: Purchase two sets of Total War maps separate from any game and have both map sets sent rolled up (no folds/creases) in a single triangular tube via US Post Office Priority Mail.
Sent to an address in the USA: $70 ($50 for two map sets + $20 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address in Canada: $80 ($50 for two map sets + $30 shipping/handling)
Sent to an address outside of USA/Canada: $90 ($50 for two map sets + $40 s/h)
Special Note: If you want three or more Total War map sets sent unfolded ask for a quote as this incurs additional costs due to increased weight. Similarly, if you must have delivery in the USA via UPS (United Parcel Service) instead of via US Post Office ask for a quote as the cost for delivery via UPS will often be a lot higher.
