{"id":2,"date":"2010-07-01T14:25:51","date_gmt":"2010-07-01T14:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.new.hmsgrd.com\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2010-07-06T23:34:01","modified_gmt":"2010-07-06T23:34:01","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.hmsgrd.com\/?page_id=2","title":{"rendered":"About HMS&frasl;GRD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For almost three decades one series of games has been dedicated to a detailed study of the Second World War in the European and Mediterranean Theaters of Operations.<br \/>\nThis award-winning series, called <strong>Europa<\/strong>, covers this great struggle from the civil war in Spain to the final victory of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">The game series was introduced with the release of <strong>Drang Nach Osten<\/strong> , designed and produced by Frank Chadwick and Rich Banner. They formed a company called <strong>Game Designers&#8217; Workshop<\/strong> .<br \/>\nFrom that first design in 1974 came the games that covered the rest of the European, Mediterranean, and African theaters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\"><strong>Drang Nach Osten<\/strong> was immediately accepted by military history enthusiasts and gamers. Each subsequent title built on that acceptance and created a cadre of people who play and participate in the series to this day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">In 1985 a company was formed to support this game series. John Astell, the principle designer of the series, and Winston Hamilton, a developer and designer of WWII games, formed <strong>Game Research\/Design<\/strong>, a company committed to the enhancement of Europa. They produced a set of accessories dedicated to the games. They also began a newsletter that became the<br \/>\nmagazine, <strong>Europa<\/strong>. In 1989 <strong>GDW<\/strong> transferred the copyrights and trademark of <strong>Europa<\/strong> to <strong>GR\/D<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Since then the company has brought out the <strong>Collector&#8217;s Edition<\/strong> series of <strong>Europa<\/strong> games, and begun two new series based on the <strong>Europa<\/strong> system: <strong>Glory: Pacific Theater 1937-45\u2122<\/strong> and <strong>The Great War: World War I On All Fronts\u2122<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">Upon Winston Hamilton&#8217;s death in March, 2001, <strong>GR\/D<\/strong> was purchased and became a part of <strong>Mill Creek Ventures, Inc. <\/strong>as <strong>GRD Games. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"style3\">In June 2004, <strong>GRD Games<\/strong>&#8216; assets and specific obligations were offered to <strong>Historical Military Services<\/strong>. <strong>HMS<\/strong> had worked with <strong>GRD Games<\/strong> for a number of years and brings additional resources to continue the series and commitment to <strong>Grand Europa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For almost three decades one series of games has been dedicated to a detailed study of the Second World War in the European and Mediterranean Theaters of Operations.
