NEWS .. 27 Apr 2008

uk 7th ar divisionAs many of our customers know, we have been preparing to go into court on April 28th to defend the company and ourselves against a lawsuit filed three years ago by one of our initial partners. We are pleased to announce that the suit has just been dropped and the filing shareholder is giving his shares back to the company. There will be no further legal action.

While this is excellent news for the company, it does have a temporary downside. Part of the funding already set aside for the publication of Total War will go to repaying the shareholder his original matching loan to the company. We believe we can now more quickly raise the money needed and will publish Total War as soon as possible. More on the schedule soon.

We want to thank all of the friends and volunteers who have supported the company. Your help and confidence in us have been an enormous help!

HMS will now be out in force at the Consimworld Expo convention in Tempe Arizona. This excellent convention is aimed at large, historical board games and we think it is, hands down, the best con we have attended. The convention runs from May 27th through June 1st with most folks arriving on Thursday or Friday and staying over the weekend. Check the Consimworld Expo website for details and how this excellent event is arranged.

HMS will have three games in a same special Europa room set aside for us. Total War will be there along with Arthur Goodwin and Gar Olmsted. Partizan! and its designer, Rob Brown will have a full playtest as will Bloody Eagles with Eric Pierce, it’s co-designer on hand. Sign up for the games as soon as possible to ensure a spot. If you only attend one event this year, this is the one to shoot for. We cannot recommend this gathering too highly!

EUROPA MAPS, THE FUTURE:

HMS will be using half-size rather than 1/4-size maps for Total War. There will be 13 half-size maps in Total War, each 18 hexes wide by 52 hexes long. A full hex of overlap will be present between each of the map sections where they join.

The area covered by these maps is much the same as that covered by the Fire in the East (FiTE) maps with two important exceptions. The western half of FiTE map 5B covering central Sweden and north-central Norway (areas not in play in Total War) are not retained. Two half maps were added along the east edge of the FiTE maps that bring everything along the Archangel - Kotlas - Kirov- Kubyshev - Saratov - Stalingrad - Astrakhan line on map. This is the Arkhangelsk -Astrakhan (AA) Line, the original specified Axis objective line for the campaign. Also shown on these eastern maps is the main Volga river system, a critical transport artery for the Soviets.

Full size maps may be available in the future if we can find a local printer with acceptable prices and good quality work for full sized maps. These would probably be available as a special order item and could be sent unfolded in a sturdy mailing tube. We will let you know if and when these are available. No idea on what these would cost at this time.

Total War was initially listed as having 26 1/4-full-size maps because it was first opened for pre-order by GRD Games who was contractually bound to use their own graphics company and the 1/4 maps they could print. We missed updating the number of maps in the current description of the game which should have been 13 and not 26 maps.

Being printed as a preliminary part of the Total War print run may be the new maps for Balkan Front (BF), First to Fight (FTF) with 3 half maps and A Winter War (AWW) with 2 half-maps. This is done partly as a last test of the chosen printer before they do the massive Total War map print run. It will also return these games to print, as all of the maps for FTF are now out of print and only a very few BF/AWW maps remain. It will bring the maps for these games up the new and final Europa map standard with adding features like resource centers and sea-circles. We will offer lower cost refit kits for those wishing to upgrade their older games.

HMS/GRD returns Europa to its roots and revisits the best selling Europa title Fire in the East. The new game covers the same time period as the older ones (summer of 1941 to the spring of 1942) but uses a completely new Soviet OB, a new map, and the latest rules for the Europa system. Buyer's who preorder Total War will also receive the Red Army from September, 1939 to March, 1942 in preparation for Grand Europa. Total War gives the Axis player the opportunity to see if he can improve on the massive offensive that pocketed and captured millions of Soviet soldiers. Can you take Moscow or Leningrad? Or are you condemned to suffer the Soviet winter short of victory? The Soviet player must build a strategic reserve large enough to stop the advancing Axis forces and throw them out of Russia. The Soviet player is aided by massive reinforcements that allow him to form new defensive lines in an attempt to slow down or stop the Axis armor thrusts. Published counters will be the same high quality counters players expect from HMS/GRD. Total War is a historical game on the German invasion of the Soviet Union, from summer 1941 to spring 1942. It charts the titanic struggle of the largest ground campaign in World War II, from the Axis offensives that brought the Germans to the gates of Moscow to the Soviet winter counteroffensive that hurled them back. Total War is a two-player game. One side controls the forces of Germany and its allies while the other controls the forces of the Soviet Union. The maps cover Eastern Europe and the western USSR from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea, from the plains of Poland to the steppes along the Volga River. Ground units represent corps, divisions, brigades, regiments, and battalions. Air units represent groups of 40 to 80 aircraft. Naval units represent task forces of warships.

Total War is a complete remake and updating of the classic Europa game, Fire in the East. The game’s Soviet order of battle makes extensive use of formerly secret Kremlin information on the Red Army forces that fought the war. The game includes a Soviet order of battle for all of the USSR from 1939 to 1942 and is the most comprehensive game OB ever published on the Red Army in peace and war. The Axis order of battle also is updated, reflecting new research since the publication of Fire in the East. The rules for Total War incorporate the latest rules for the Europa system, with on-demand air power, armor effects, combined arms, and much more, recreating both the German blitzkrieg that captured entire Soviet armies and the Soviet deep operations that nearly splintered the invaders in the depth of the Russian winter. The regular price once the game is available will be $195.
